Hi

Between the vertebra are disc which act as shock absorbers. The discs are composed of an outer ring called an annulus fibrosus and an inner aspect called the nucleus.
The annulus is not suppose to bulge out of its space and if it does or if the nucleus bulges out , it can potentially compress the nerves that may be in close proximity of the vertebra and cause symptoms such as back pain, abnormal sensations , weakness.
Narrowing of the spinal canal may occur if the discs are degenerating.
Treatment varies but usually starts with bed rest for about a week, use of pain medications. After this time period physiotherapy is initiated.

I hope this helps
