Hi,,,My name is Anne..5 years ago just after my mum had her stroke I cam down with a severe case of Shingles needing hospitalisation. Now 5 years on I am still getting re-occurences, although with no rash or blistering. The pain is extreme. My original shingles started from mid chest and travelled down my left arm . This is where my pain is now. Even my hair resting on my arm is extremely painful. Also the wind blowing on my arm is enough to send me through the roof...Please help!!!

You have suffered a severe Herpes Zoster involving specific dermatome on side.
This pain is some time difficult to treat but there are many option available which you and your Neurologist can try, I am sure your pain will certainly get better following are my suggestions:
1)Local analgesic:gel,or patch may help local anaesthetic (Lidocaine ) Patch.
2) Systemic analgesics : NSAID or Opioid like Tramadol alone or in combination.
3)Anti depressants like TCA (tri cyclic antidepressants)or SSRI (serotonin re uptake inhibitors)
4) Anticonvulsants :Cabamezapine and many new one may help.
5) Local cold compress or some times hot fomentation
6) TENS: Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, stimulation of peripheral nerve by electrical energy through skin.

If you use these judiciously I am sure your pain will reduce considerably.
Hope you improve soon
