Slipped And Twisted Ankle, Lots Of Swelling Around Ankle And Foot. Any Medication ?

I slipped and twisted my ankle 4 days ago. Was still able to walk on it. Went to emergency of hospital and after an xray they said that I had a fracture in the ankle bone. Not requiring surgery so put a splint on (moon boot) and gave me crutches. Lots of swelling around the ankle and foot which is reducing but just last few hours three toes have pis and needles. Toes are warm, not swollen and colour is pink. Leave boot on at all times, Will ring my GP to see if they can come to do a home visit. Might it just be swelling is going down and getting bloody supply to toes?

Hi, Thanks for using HCM.

Your symptoms of pins and needle could be due to cutaneous nerve compression by splint. you can ask your doctor to put splint in a correct way, to reduce compression on nerves.
As your toes are warm and pink in color, blood supply is not affected, need not have to worry for that.
keep checking your toes daily.
Take rest, avoid weight bearing on affected foot.
Hope I answered your question. Consult your doctor for further examination and management.
Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.
Wish you good health. Take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

All fractures involving the ankle and foot will result in substantial swelling in that area. This is compounded by the fact the ankle and foot are the most dependent parts in the body.

It is common to have pins and needles sensation in the toes owing to the pressure exerted by the oedematous tissues on the cuteneous nerves.

You are advised to keep the foot end in elevation most of the times and keep moving your toes regularly which aids in resolution of the swelling.

The general guidelines of treatment are as follows -
* Rest to the injured part and dont involve in activities which puts additional strain on the injured tissues.
* Ice packing should be applied for about 20 minutes once in every 2 hours.
* Use elastic compression bandage around the swollen area
* Elevation of the limb
* Analgesic & anti inflammatory medications

Hope this information is helpful . Good day
