Sinus Condition With Swollen Salivary Glands

I have had a continuing case of blocked sinus for years. I suspect that it is not sinusitis or swollen sinuses since when I lay down the drainage goes to that side and blocks that sinus so I cannot breath through that nostril, bu the anterior sinus is free from blockage. Lately my salavary glands have been swelling as well. I have been to an ear, nose and throat specialist who had me do an MRI that yielded nothing. His suggestion was to surgically remove all glands without knowing what the problem was or even a needle biopsy! This seems strange to me. Are the two conditions related? What can I do?

Hello,

Let's evaluate your case from the start. I need your answers to the following questions:
- How old are you ? Male or female ?
- When exactly did the sinus problem start ? Which side, right or left ?
- When exactly did the salivary gland swelling arise ?
- What are the salivary glands affected, parotid or submandibular gland ? Which side ?
- Are there any other symptoms ?
- Is there fever ?

1. How old are you? 56 Male of Female? Male
2. When exactly did the salavary problem start? About 5 years ago.
3. Which side, right or left. Whichever side I am sleeping on. (only at night) It's like there is a reservoir of stuff sitting there to run to whatever side is down.
4. When did the salavary gland swelling arise? About a year ago.
5. What salivary glands are affected? It started with the right submandibular gland swelling. Then right side parotid and left side parotid within about 6 months.
6. No other symptoms.
7. Is there fever? No.
8. Did you take any medications? Was administered antibiotics for 9 days, no affect. On my own I started noticing that it seemed to be related to allergies. So I began taking Anti-Histamines like Clariton 24 hour, Alavert which seem to help.

Thank you for responding Dr. Ahmad.

1. f6 year old male.
2. Sinus problem started about 5 years ago on whichever side is down when I sleep. (Only a night problem).
3. Salivary gland swelling arose about a year ago.
4. First on right side submandibular gland swelling. That is when the EMT had me get a MRI which could not be read or was blurry. No diagnosis. Dr. told me not to worry about. Then about 6 months later, right side parotid gland swelling, went to EMT and told needed to have both submandibular and right side parotid surgically removed. EMT suddently went out of business and moved practice. Recently, left side parotid gland has been swelling.
5. Forehead will break out in bumps like little pimples. When I take alergy medications, they go down as do parotid glands.
6. There is no fever.
7. No medications taken. I have been taking anti-histamines lately like Claritin 24 hour and Alavert 24 hour which seem to help.

Thank you for responding!

I recommend that you consult a surgeon as early as possible. A biopsy may be needed if the diagnosis is not clear. Complete examination of the salivary glands should be done to detect the cause of their enlargement.
