Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband, 56 and very healthy, broke his hip falling from his bike. In hospital awaiting surgery later today. Using Dilaudid IV and Loratab P.O. for pain control which works pretty well but is making him nauseated. Using Zofran IV to help combat nausea. Should we consider changing pain meds?
Most of the analgesics cause nausea and vomiting by irritating gastric mucosa. Sometimes analgesics cause blood vomiting also. Stress also predisposes gastric irritation – stress ulcer. Medicines are given to prevent irritation of gastric mucosa and development of stress ulcers. Advice 1. Add ranitidine 50 mg twice daily intravenously 2. Continue other medications as suggested 3. Take medicines after meal Thanks
