Should Statins Be Taken For Left Atrial Enlargement?

77 years old, 124#, 5 5, went in for shortness of breath....ekg was given with results of left atrial enlargement and sinus rhythm low voltage in precordial leads. Am active i.e. biking 25 miles, walking golf course, take classes at the gym. Try to eat healthy. Cholesterol level 237 and am not taking a statin although it has been prescribed. All that was suggested I do is take the statin . Is this a symptom of clogged arteries?

Thanks for consulting at my virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and I can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I assure you not to worry as I will take care all of your medical concerns.

Your main issue is deranged lipid profile and due to that there has been started an early stage of Coronary Artery Disease. In this disease there is arteriosclerotic changes in the coronary vasculature of the heart and supply of blood is compromised to the heart muscles itself. Heart is unable to pump optimally due to less nutritional and oxygen supply from compromised blood and you get shortness of breath due to the results of these disease events. Suboptimal functionality of the heart---less blood supplied throughout the body---shortness of breath, fatigue, unexplained weight loss.

Yes, you are doing the best thing possible. I really encourage and appreciate your efforts to get healthy. You have to first control your lipid profile through exercise and other modalities like diet changes. If it fails then definitely we have to go for cholesterol lowering medicines.

After every 6 weeks go for a repeat Fasting Lipid Profile and get it checked by a physician to see how you doing and what's going on in there. Hope I answered all of your health concerns . If you have further questions in future, feel free to contact me anytime & I will get back to you in no time. Please give a positive feedback.

Have a wonderful time ahead.

Best Regards!
