Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Should Medication For Schizophrenia Be Taken Life Long Or Is It Curable?
My wife is suffering from Schezofrenia, and as directed by a psychatrist she is practicing a medicine called Aripriprazole from the past 3-4 years. Recently I told her to stop the medicine as I thought due to this her pregnancy is getting delayed.
Could you please suggest was this medicine to be used lifelong or the patient get normal after a period, also please suggest she can be able to get pregnant as a normal women.
In this case it is very important to discuss it in depth with the treating psychiatrist. If your wife does have Schizophrenia it is important to take medications and keep the symptoms under control. It would not be good if she was pregnant and the symptoms returned. We need to understand and deal with both the issues independently and then make a decision about the line of management. You need to discuss this in great depth with your psychiatrist or take a second opinion if needed. Do not delay it. Usually after stopping medication all women have normal reproductive cycles and can get pregnant without any complications. An evaluation from an expert will help determine how your wife is progressing and then we will be able to gauge what her long term outcome will be.
