Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Should Medical Check-up Be Done After Choking On Food?
Hi there I choked a week ago on a piece of steak and almost lost my life. A waiter at the restaurant was able to get it out in time. I didn t go to the hospital or see a dr since but I have had like a bad kink in my neck, coughing and headaches that started the next morning. A few family members tell me I should get checked is it something I should be concerned?
Good morning, I would not be overly concerned but since you are feeling a "kink" suggests that a physical exam by your doctor is a good idea. If there is an abnormality in your throat, it could possibly cause future choking episodes.
Have you noticed any difficulty swallowing thin liquids or any other foods/drinks or was this the only episode? A trend in swallowing difficulties may indicate a form of "dysphagia" which needs to be addressed with therapy and diet.
In summary, I would make a visit to your physician to have a check and, if needed, an upper g.i. or swallowing evaluation per his examination diagnosis.
In the meantime, do not worry. Live every day to its fullest and be happy. There is always a positive side to every situation.
Most Sincerely, Kathryn J. Shattler, MS, RDN
