Should I Be Concerned About The Earache After Tympanoplasty?

My Eleven year old son has had a second Tympanoplasty done on his left ear. He had draining of runny clear wax. Now he is complaining of his ear being sore when he moves his jaw. I m thinking he might have a pimple in ear, but should I be more concerned?

Hello dear,
After going through your history, I believe you have some genuine concern and I will try to help you out of this situation.

Painful ear on movement of jaw may be due to Arthritis of Temporomandibular joint ( Joint between the jaw and skull) or any Furuncle inside the ear. Most likely it is the pain because of the arthritis, which can be tested by giving a small pressure infront of the ear canal and asking him to open and close his jaw. Usually it causes pain. If so, then usually it is due to falulty eating habit. eating hard food and using onside while chewing are the main cause. Here you can ask him to take soft food and give some worm compress over the joint which will cure it in 2 days. May need some analgesic.

If it is furuncle, then you push the tragus ( Small elevation anterior to the ear canal) pain starts. Here you have to take advice from an ENT specialist who may plan for a drainage. It usually needs antibiotic and analgesics.

I hope I could solve your query. Please do not hesitate to clarify more doubts for the same situation.

Thank you for the way you are in my life.
