Should A Knee Replacement Be Undergone For Bone On Bone Osteoarthritis?

I was told I had bone on bone osteoarthritis both knees, no space in one knee and minimal spacing in the other. I was told to anticipate knee replacement. I have received Kenalog x 1 in q knee. I am 66. 1. Do the UVA doctors perform the subvastus approach? 2. Am I making things worse by grinding bone surfaces and need to consider knee replacement sooner rather then use pain or disability as my decision guide? Thank you.

Hi,

as you mentioned your history i remembered one case of mine, she had the same issue and was advised Total Knee replacement for both knees. We planned for the 12 weeks protocol. A combination of Diet, Medicine and Physical therapy. Apparantly things fell into place and we avoided the knee replacement.

Diet - good calcium oriented and low calorie to reduce the weight
Medicine - as guided by the physician
Physical therapy - strengthening the lower limb as a whole and also the core stability exercises.

The things fell good, and she is able to do running now.

Also, trying out a physical therapy prior to decide the surgery will be recommended by me.

If you want anything in personal i can surely assist you

hi,

thank-you for providing the brief history of you.

As you mentioned you have arthirits and it's severe now I will advice you to understand first what is OA knee and what it does, how it happens and how to get rid of it.

The first step is to get the orthopedic assessment done and a physcial therapist will help you with a detailed history. Later, take an MRI of the knee joint to expose the underlying soft tissues. Now, once we know the status of the knee the next plan needed is to undergo the pain management and later on the vigorous exercise to get the maximum torque in muscle. Now maximum strength in muscle is needed irrespective of undergoing surgery or not. As if you undergo surgery without any optimum strength then the surgery can be failure and the pain will also persist later on.

Also, the cases I have been seeing with severe OA who were asked for surgery we have never undergone any surgery. And with physcial therapy we have 100% success rate. Patience lesds to success and that's what we God with effort.

Also , knee replacement is advised to people who cannot bear the pain and cannot perform exercises. But the sad part is later on the pain persists and there is only one choice is of medication.

As now you know that physcial therapist can help you avoid surgery and get the maximum strength in the knee muscles i am sure you will get 100% success with out surgery.
