Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Should A Blood Test Be Done Before Prescribing Porphyria?
Should a doctor perform any specific blood test(s) such as for porphyria or bone marrow suppression or other contra-indicated blood disorders for any race of female patient for whom Tegretol is being considered to treat tonic seizures that infrequently occur (3-10/year) while the patient is asleep – three episodes have been witnessed in the last 12 months; evidence of recurring seizure activity is evident in a recent brain scan. The patient is not primarily Asian, and is of unknown ancestry (adoped from parents of undisclosed origin).
Hi , welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service. I have read your question and here is my advice. Though Tegral has many side effects however if some one has seizures its used is well justified. There is no need to do any test before prescribing it. However a history of hypersensitivity of the tablet should be taken, and once pt started he should be followed for the side effects. Hopes i have answered your question .I would be happy to answer any further question if you have.
kind Regards n Dr Raha
