Should Thyronorm Be Taken Life Long To Manage Hypothyroidism?

I am 31 years old. 8 months back due to severe hair fall, I consulted a homeopathic doctor who diagnosed hypothyroidism. I got my TSH level tested and it was 6.67. Then for four months I had homeopathic medicine for hypothyroidism. After a while, the rate of my hair fall again increased and this time I consulted an MBBS doctor. This time my TSH level was reported at 4.52, T3 as 100 and T4 as 6.8. The doctor prescribed me Thyronorm 12.5mg. After consuming Thyronorm 12.5 mg for 15 days, my hair fall has become all the more severe and I am having irregular periods too (My periods were normal before consuming Thyronorm 12.5mg). Should I stop consuming Thyronorm 12.5 mg as it is resulting in more problems than before and renew my homeopathic treatment. Kindly, also tell that if I continue with Thyronorm 12.5, do I need to continue with it life long ?

Hello,

The treatment of hypothyroidism depends on the root cause.

The most common cause of hypothyroidism is an autoimmune disorder known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

If the cause is Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the treatment is thyroid hormone replacement therapy and it is necessary to take this treatment life-long.

If the cause is a virus (subacute thyroiditis), the disease usually resolves spontaneously within months.

Iodine deficiency can be another cause for hypothyroidism and in these cases, the iodine supplements provide serious benefit.

If you were my patient I will ask to do an anti-TPO blood test to conclude the right diagnosis. I 'm not a homoeopathic doctor, so I will not recommend a homoeopathic medicine.

You have a slightly high TSH result and serious symptoms of hypothyroidism like severe hair fall and irregular periods.

So, you need to take regularly the thyroid hormone replacement therapy and in my opinion, it is necessary to increase the doses.

In my opinion, you need Levothyroxine. TSH test will be repeated after 6 weeks of therapy, to see if you need further dose adjustments.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Elona Xhardo, Endocrinologist
