Should I Get An Xray After Swallowing A Quarter?

My son swallowed a quarter last night. He claims he has belly pain now. Should I get an X-ray. He is 12 yrs old 5ft 2, 100lbs. He never complained of esophageal pain or feeling like he has it caught in his throat. It may be psychological as he was afraid after he swallowed it.

Hi,
Than ks for writing in.

If he says that he swallowed the quarter then it must be true. The quarter might have passed through the throat and esophagus and into the stomach and bowels. It is possible that the coin has got stuck in between the small and large intestines. This is called the ileocaecal junction and is one of the narrowest points. By getting the X ray taken the exact location of the coin will be known and its possible risks and dangers. Even should his pain be of psychological nature, that will also be known. Please do not worry and get the X ray of abdomen done immediately.
