Should I Be Worried About The Black Eye Which Has Appeared After A Head Injury Few Days Back?

It is now day three after falling and bumping my forehead above my right eye (hard). There was no sign of injury below my eyebrow whatsoever for the first few days. Now suddenly I have woken up with a swollen black eye (all above my eye and inside corner). The inside corner of my eye (along my nose) is very swollen and the blackest. My forehead swelling has almost disappeared now. Should i be worried about the black eye? I still don t feel great (very tired). My New Year s eve hangover has lasted 3 days and i have a headache. I certainly feel better today than the past two days though.

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

The black eye, along with redness in the inner corner, and swelling is due to bleeding within the tissues under the skin, as well as, under the thin outer layer (called conjunctiva) of the eye.

There is nothing to worry about. It will take around 3 weeks for the blood to be completely absorbed from both : soft tissues and the eye), with complete restoration of color, without any disfigurement or scar. No treatment, except for a short course of anti-inflammatory pain-killers is required to reduce swelling and pain.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.
