Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Should I Be Concerned For Pain In Back Of Neck That Radiates From Armpit?
My husband has pain in the back of his neck and it radiates down to his armpit on the right side. This morning he was unable to put his chin to his chest or pick up his head to look up at the ceiling. I have scheduled an appointment with the chiropractor but it is not until Monday. Is there reason for concern?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for your query. Neck pain and its radiation to arm that he is having are suggestive of degenerative spondylottic changes of the cervical spine. X-ray of neck in lateral view or MRI will help in the diagnosis. Treatment includes 1. Use of cervical collar helps in immobilisation and brings relief. 2. Medical drugs like pain killers - acetaminophen/ibuprofen and muscle relaxants might be helpful. 3. Cervical isometric exercises are beneficial to maintain the strength of the neck muscles. Neck and upper back stretching exercises, as well as light aerobic activities, also are recommended under the guidance of a physical therapist. 4. Hot fomentation helps in relieving acute symptoms. 5. He can avoid using a pillow.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care
