Should I Be Concerned About Rattling And Brown Phlegm After Tonsillectomy?

Hi! I had a tonsillectomy (with suturing) on Wednesday and today is Saturday. I was on tylenol #3 every 4 hours for the first few days and now am trying to just take a local anesthetic gargle they gave me at the ER yesterday when I presented with shortness of breath following a T3 dose. Last night was the first solid sleep I ve had since Wednesday - I think I managed to get about 6 hours! This morning however I woke up with rattling in my throat and coughed up some brownish phlegm. It seems to be all clear now. Is this of concern and should I go seek medical attention immediately? I am seeing my surgeon in follow up in 2 days. Thank you!

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi,after tonsillectomy,it is normal that little oozing of blood may occur from the surgical site. That little amount of blood might have gone in your airway. And with irritation of your airway, you might have suffered from cough with brown phlegm(which is old blood combined with mucus).

Looking at your symptoms, you need not worry.

Only if you are suffering from fresh blood coming from mouth, then it is of concern and you may need to consult your doctor as early as possible.

Hope this answers your question.Take Care.
