Should Duphaston Be Taken For Irregular Periods At The Age Of 51?

Hi there, I am a 51 year old who s period s have become a little irregular, which I assume at my age, is normal. However, my gynae has twice now put me on duphaston - the first time what toward the end of last year and now again in April. I am to take a 10 day course beginning 18 April, 18 May and 18 June. The first month, my period arrived about 5 days after the last tablet, however after finishing the course in May, my period only arrived yesterday, the 12th June. She has instructed me to continue with the 18 June course. My question is what is the reason for prescribing this medicine at my age, and are there any adverse affects, again, esp at my age? Many thanks.

Hi,

You are being given this treatment for your irregular periods and also as hormone replacement therapy for menopausal symptoms. It is also protective against endometrial cancers, and Bone thinning (osteoporosis). It may also carry adverse effects may be like migraine, abdominal pain diarrhea, liver problems. There are certain indications and contraindications to start this therapy and I am sure your doctor must have evaluated you before placing you on this therapy. If you have any new symptoms or concerns you need to see your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Rama Kumari, General & Family Physician
