Sharp Pain From Left Rib Cage To Back. Pain While Deep Breathing And Gastritis. Symptoms?
Today approximately 2 pm I had a sudden sharp pain in my back that seemed to shoot through my body. I since have had the pain under my left rib cage that radiates to my back being felt on my side as well. If I take a deep deep breath I experience pain, have gas and have been burping. What could all this be symptoms of?
Hi, A possible cause of your symptoms is gastritis. This is inflammation of the stomach lining. This can be caused by H. Pylori which is a bacterium that lives in the lining of the stomach. It can also be caused by bile from your small intestine refluxing into your stomach and causing inflammation of the lining of the stomach. Another possible cause could be a peptic ulcer which is an ulcer in either the stomach or duodenum (upper intestine). My suggestion would be to try an antacid first. If this relieves your symptoms easily then it may be a simple case of gastritis. If you find the pain is not relieved, I would suggest you visit your doctor for further assessment. The treatment for H.Pylori is antibiotics and an acid-blocking drug. If your doctor feels it may be an ulcer then these are usually diagnosed by endoscopy which is a telescope passed into the stamach. Hope this helps. Regards, Dr K A Pottinger MBChB FRCA
