Severe Pain Due To Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis. Taking Prednisone. Suggestion Which Could Help Me?

I have had fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis for over 20 years. I'm 61 years old and the pain is extrememly worse. If I try to work outside in the flowers or anything my hands and my whole body are in terrible pain. I am a very active person and was always a work oholic. Lyrica is not right for me. Can you over any suggestions. I am a 61 year old female that wants to continue doing things and enjoying life and don't want to give up. Sometime the pain will be so serious for about a week my doctor will give me a prednisone dose pak to calm things down. Do you have any other suggestions that could help me. Thank you.

Hello,
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.

I had gone through your query and understand your concern.

First of you have to admit one thing that " there is no definitive cure for Fibromyalgia "
still now cause for this disease is under research. Scientists proposed it as genetic or infective. But not yet confirmed.

There are only symptomatic management and life style modification.

As for Osteoarthritis is concerned in addition to Prednisolone you can try DMARDS ( Disease modifying Anti Rheumatic drugs ) like Hydroxyquinone qnd Methotrexate with help of your family doctor.

My advice for all Fibromyalgia patients are

Only symptomatic management and lifestyle modification are helpful in this disease.

If possible do Aerobic exercise and get proper sleep even if you feel un sleepiness. eat healthy foods.
Do yoga and meditation to get relief from fear and to develop your internal strength to face the disease.
plan your activities and sleeping time. Do not stress yourself too much. Just accept the job which you can do without any stress. If you the work as overload just frankly say "No" without any reason.
Spend enough time for entertainment and other recreational activities.
Never compare yourself with others.
Everybody is unique.
Try to prove yourself as best than others.
All the Best.

Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

There is no cure for Fibromyalgia. In general treatment includes both medicines and self care.

Medications may help reduce the pain and improve sleep. Commonly used drugs are ANALGESICS - acetaminophen, tramadol, ibuprofen, naprosyn etc
ANTIDEPRESSANTS - Duloxetine may help ease the pain and fatigue. Amitryptiline or Fluoxetine may help in promoting sleep.
ANTIEPILEPTICS - like Gabapentin is sometimes helpful in reducing pains.

Other treatment options which can be used to help cope with the pain of fibromyalgia include:
* swimming, sitting or exercising in a heated pool or warm water
* cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) - a talking therapy that changes the way you think about things so you can deal with problems more positively
* psychotherapy - a talking therapy that helps you understand and deal with your thoughts and feelings
* relaxation techniques
* physiotherapy - techniques such as massage are used to improve physical problems, such as muscle stiffness or weakness
* psychological support - any kind of counselling or support group that helps you deal with the issues caused by fibromyalgia

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
