Red, Swollen, Hot To Touch Area With White Spots Entire Width Of Back Of Knee. Suggested Antibiotics. Any Ideas?

My mother has a large red area behind her knee. It is swollen, hot to the touch, and has white spots on the swollen area. She was put on antibiotics by an ER doctor 2 days ago. It started out as what she thought was a bug bite but is now as large as the entire width of the back of her knee. Any thought as to what it could be?

Hi and thank you for this query.

From the description of these symptoms, this could likely represent cellulitis/erysipelas/or an allergic reaction if a bug bite is suspected. These represent infections of the skin and in most cases cause by staphylococcal or streptococcal bacteria. It is generally treated with antibiotics, rest, pain medications and cold packs. Depending on its degree of severity, antibiotics may be prescribed orally or as injections.

For now, continue the antibiotics and the other measures mentioned above. If the condition is not regressing within the next days, then get her back for further evaluation.

Hope you find this helpful. feel free to ask me more questions about this condition. I wish her a speedy recovery and y regards to her..
