Reason For Smelling Cigarette Smoke Even Tough Nobody Smokes?

So sometime last year I have been smelling cigarette smoke, it usaly always happens when I'm in bed trying to sleep, but nobody in my household smokes. It stopped for a while and just came back and it's worse, it's a lot of a stronger smell like someone is puffing in my face and it has been happening at all times of the day. I've have told my mum about this and she just thinks there is something wrong with my sinus. Please help for I have to go to school and I can't keep dealing with staying up late at night to early in the morning fanning my face and breathing rapidly.

Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post suggest that you might be having Dysosmia.

It can be due to:
1. The olfactory system (deals with the sensation of smell) is appreciating an odour when it is not present in the environment.
2. The olfactory system has become more sensitive to an odour that doesn't bother other people.

The causes of altered smell can be attributed to:
1. Some medications like metronidazole
2. Exposure to certain chemical
3. Common cold or sinus infection
4. Depression, anxiety, etc.

A proper examination of the nose & throat will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis.
So, it will be better to consult an ENT specialist & get a proper physical examination done to rule out any organic lesion or any other cause in nose or throat.
So that appropriate management steps could be taken.
There is nothing to worry, you will be fine.

Wishing you a Good Health.
Take care.
