Rash Appeared After Taking Amoxycillin For Ear Infection For An Infant

My 15 month old son went to his well check up Feb 21 and come to find out he had an ear infection. He was prescribed Amoxicillin. He completed the course of amoxicillin Sunday March 2. On Monday afternoon a rash started to appear, but it was very minute. On Tuesday March 4 we got a call from his day care that he had a rash all over his body went to pick him up and it was a red rash non-raised and acted himself. Wednesday rolled around and had not heard back from his pediatrician so I took him to a care now because the rash was worse especially on his arms and legs and bright red. The doctor said it was a reaction to the amoxicillin and put him on prednisolone to help relieve the rash. He had his first dose of prednisolone Wednesday night . Thursday his hands and feet were swollen and took him back to the same doctor at care now, but the doctor showed no concern and continue the current tx. Here is it Saturday and my son still has this awful rash all over his body. What is going on with him? And why isn't the rash responding to the prednisolone? What should I do with him? The rash is still prominent on his arms and legs and even his cheeks.

Hello

Welcome in H.C.M.

I have gone through your query regarding rashes over body after complition of antibiotic course of amoxycillin and after giving steroid there developed swelling on feet.

After considering the facts of your clinical history and observing the opinion of your doctors I would like to say that it is not likely to be a drug reaction as usually drug reacts just after first dose because just after first dose the titre of drug remains high and even if there is delayed sensitivity than reaction may appear after second dose. In your case it developed after comlition of full course so it is unlikely to be a drug reaction.

I think most likely your kid had developed some kind of erruptive fever may be measeles etc. Some times if any young child developed any infective disease may be fever and as body resistance compromises super infection of such viral diseases may take place.

Now you should consult your paedtriation for thorough examination and some relevent investigations to find out the real fact that may be manage accordingly.

Regards.
