Pain In Thighs, Difficulty In Walking. History Of Nasty Fall. X-ray Revealed No Breaks, Worsening Arthritis. Best Treatment?

Hi, about 4 weeks ago I had a nasty fall, banged my shin and twisted my torso and this has left me with pain at the top of my thighs which is making walking difficult. I had an x-ray which confirmed that there were no breaks in the hip but worsening of arthritis. So I am assuming the pain is muscle pain and my question is - is the best treatment rest or exercise? Thanks for any help you can give me. Muriel Wolstenholme (aged 82)

Hello Muriel,
I have read details of your question.

It looks that you had fall about 4 weeks ago.For fall induced sprain rest is not indicated after 4 weeks. At this stage your sprain has already been healed. At present you need a god physiotherapy with a good analgesic like advil.

Hope this will help you.

With best wishes.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Generally soft tissue injuries need REST for a week or so as to give them a chance to recover and get back to normalcy.

The general guidelines for soft tissue injury management is as follows -

* Rest to the injured part and dont involve in activities which puts additional strain on the injured tissues.
* Ice packing should be applied for about 20 minutes once in every 2 hours to alleviate the acute pain.
* Once the acute pain subsides, then moist heat is applied to cause the muscles to relax
* Judicious of Analgesic & anti inflammatory medications

Your symptoms should resolve with the above measures.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
Normally soft tissue injury will take 1-2 weeks to heal. some time it will take more time.
Now as 4 weeks are already passed you need to do muscle strengthening exesices to strengthen the muscle around joint.
Hope this will helps you. Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.
Wish you good health. Take care.
