Overcame Addiction To Opium, Recently Needs To Have Bupin Prescribed By Psychiatrist. Is It Relapse ?

hi doctor, my husband was addicted to opium for about 2 years but after treatment from a drug rehab centre he was slowly able to overcome the problem the psychiatrist treating him prescribed bupin forte as an anti depressant to gradually wear of the effects of opium. My husband successfully adapted to the medicine and was drug free for quite sometime but recently he feels the need to have bupin again....I fear this is a relapse and he might be addicted again need your advice and guidance

Your concerns are genuine and understandable.
It is appreciable that you are able to discuss this issue of craving (the urge to us opium again) freely with your husband. It shows that he is motivated to stay away from opium even though the thought of taking it is there. This is not a relapse but a commonly faced challenge by former drug users. It is a good idea to consult your psychiatrist again at this point in time.
In case of stressful life events, there can be an urge to use opium again. A few sessions of therapy can help you overcome the current crisis.
Continue the medications prescribed as it is helping him to avoid relapsing (using the substance again). You can be with him and support him during such times.

Psychiatrist Dr. Anjana Rao Kavoor's  Response
Hi priya,

Bupropion (Bupin) is used as an antidepressant or for smoking cessation. He may have had symptoms of depressive illness for which he was treated with bupropion.
And now you say that he feels the need to take bupropion (and not opioid). He may be having some symptoms or complaints for which he feels the need to do so. Consult the psychiatrist to see whether he actually needs the drug. If he has symptoms of depressive illness the psychiatrist may decide to restart the drug.

Hope this helps,
A Rao

Psychiatrist Dr. Dr.Nehal's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for using healthcare magic.

Bupropion is good, anti depressant agent with anti craving property also.

You should take him to psychiatrist for detailed evaluation whether he has re -started addiction or not.
There are urine kit tests available to find out the addiction . You may get prescription from your doctor.

Doctor may consider deaddiction treatment if addicted or may give treatment for depression if any.

I hope It will help you.

Thanks.
