Need Medication For Cough And Gagging Of Phlem

my daughter is 22 months old and in the past few days has had a cold. she seems to be feeling good and is in good spirits. when she lays down to sleep within and hour she begins coughing almost non stop plus gagging on flem that there has been no sign of during the day. when she is held upright the coughing goes away

There are several possibilities for her cough. Your daughter should be able to breathe comfortably without the use of respiratory muscles, excessive chest movement and without any change in the color of her lips or skin.
Sometimes there is post nasal drip and the congestion from her nose drips to the back of the throat and causes a cough. Propping up her pillow and cleaning the nasal passages with nasal saline preparations for children may help. Monitoring her temperature and keeping her well hydrated are also important.
Other causes include a variety of infections, including RSV, pertussis, influenza and parainfluenza. If the cough does not improve, I would advise seeking care from your pediatrics office.
