Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son has been having tics since he was around the age of 5 (he is 7 now) He started off with only the eye blinking. I didn't think anything of it at this point and didn't even know it was a tic. Around the age of 6 he developed two more tics; throat clearing and and facial grimacing. At around 7 he developed 2 more; eye movements, and head jerks. I finally got him into behavioral health and I told the doctor that he has both vocal and motor tics. She diagnosed him with Chronic Motor Tic Disorder. After reading up on tic disorders I found out that CMTVD is either motor OR vocal tics and not both. My son has both. So, my question is, is it normal for a doctor to diagnose based on what he/she sees rather than what the parent is saying. She said she didn't hear any vocal tics during the 30 minute visit. But I feel like just because he didn't have a vocal tic at that time doesn't mean he doesn't have a vocal tic at all. Should I get a second opinion?
