My father is a nonhypertensive, nondiabetic, post triple bypass and massive (70%) hemorrhagic stroke for ten years now. He has lost over 80lbs. in the last two years, is bedridden, noncommunicative and showing beginning signs of pressure sores. We reposition him on a two hour schedule except between the hours of 2am and 6am(when I, the sole caregiver, am asleep) He has a history of chronic smoking (2 packs/day) and alcoholism. We live on a remote island where fruits, vegetables and grains are hard to come by. His regular diet currently consists of locally grown starches (taro, sweet potatoes, yams, breadfruit and bananas), locally caught meat (fish), and locally grown vegetables and fruits (papayas, birds nest fern, Chinese cabbage, mangoes, coconuts, pineapple, oranges, kangkong, mbele). I supplement his meals with Ensure and liquid multivitamins. He is dysphagic and is on liquid diets now. I worry about the impending pressure sores. What would be his daily caloric need and what else can I do to ensure his comfort.
