My Brother Had A Blood Clot Removed From His Right

My brother had a blood clot removed from his right arm. Two fingers (ring & little) did not have any feeling in them and were cold to the touch. His fingers are now warm; but he has a lot of pain in his fingers. If he moves them a lot, the pain subsides, but if he doesn't move them, the pain becomes severe. What would be causing this? Should he keep his hand at heart level?
