Lost Wife And In Depression. Drinking Alcohol A Lot And Collapsed. How Can He Be Supported?

Our neighbour lost his wife 18 months ago and has gone downhill and has been drinking heavily and smoking dope ever since. We have been very concerned about him and have seen him in some very waisted states. He came to us yesterday shaking and asking is he could borrow our phone to call his mum. He had collapsed at work and had been taken to hospital. He was in such a state that we called the ambulance and got him back to hospital. He realised he has a problem and has been drinking vodka very heavily for quite some time now. He said he wanted to die and tried to so by drinking himself to death. We want to help him but don't know what we can do to ease the withdrawals that he going to experience. He house is a mess and we were planning on going there today to see if we could help clean it up for him. We don't know if he had any drink last night. Is it wise to try and help? He is seeing a phyc nurse on Monday.

HI
It is good to know that you want to help some body. but question is how much and how to help?
His problems are related to alcohol abuse and may be depression after losing his wife, resulting in increase of alcohol consumption which in turn will worsen the depression. The first and foremost he needs is hospitalization in a de addiction unit .Psy nurse may not be the appropriate help but a psychiatry hospitalization should really help him
GOOD LUCK
