My daughter 24 years od was prescribed with gabapentin 100 mg 3 times per day for my chronic back pain . Her mri was negative. She also was prescribed with risperdal 2 mg 2x per day because of paranoid scizophrenia. these 2 medicines were given when she was hospitalized in PSYCHIATRIC unit. She developed swelling on her legs and looks like zombie. She was too sleepy that she cannot do activities of daily living. Her appointment to out patient psychiatrist will be on March 1,2017 to a psychiatrist she didn t meet before. Because of side effects she just took risperdal 2mg at bedtime and tapered gabapentin 2x per day then 1x at bedtime .She feels better now, leg swelling is less. less somnolent and able to do ADLs.She doesn t look like zombie anymore,She has no paranois symptoms toop. Did she do it right?
Yes, she probably has done right thing. In fact dizziness, excessive sleep, fainting all are common with Gabapentin. Edema also do occur with it. So she has rightly tapered the drug. Yes she should not stop Rispedone without advice of the psychiatrist.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
