Is Vomiting Common After Being Gluten-free For A Long Period?

I have celiac disease, and have been gluten-free for three years. Yesterday I accidentally ingested a piece of normal bread. I then experienced violent vomiting. Is this common after being gluten-free for a long period?

Hello,

It is not that gluten-free diet caused the problem. It is the bread that caused severe gastritis as you are allergic to gluten and hence the severe vomiting on eating bread in a case of Celiac disease. If the problem persists then I would advise you the following in such a situation.
-Take a PPI like omeprazole.
-Domperidone for vomiting may need a prescription.
-Take an antacid.
-Once the vomiting stops take plenty of oral fluids.
-Consult your doctor for clinical evaluation, examination and any investigations as needed for getting a correct additional treatment as needed as the effect of bread may remain for a few days to few weeks.
-Do not repeat any gluten-containing diet.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. T Chandrakant
