Is Vertigo Caused By 8th Cranial Nerve Damage From Acoustic Trauma?

I have been diagnosed with 8th cranial nerve damage and suffer from tinnitus, hearing loss, and vertigo as a result. They have attributed this to acoustic trauma from military service. The V.A. is recognizing the tinnitus and hearing loss but is denying the vertigo. My neurologist is insist that the vertigo is being caused by the 8th cranial nerve damage. He determined this through battery of test. Is vertigo caused by 8th cranial nerve damage from acoustic trauma? The explanation my neurologist stated was it happens because the nerve is shared by auditory signals and vestibular signals.

Welcome in HCM.

I understand your concern and here I would like to say that eight cranial nerve cares fibers of both vestibule and cochlea. Vestibule is concern with balancing and cochlea is for hearing. Acoustic trauma may cause damage to vestibular system as well and this may be confirmed by thorough study and investigation of Vestibular function test which will help in localizing the site of lesion.
