Is Using Beta Blocker Safe To Treat Enlarged Aorta?

After a recent echo cardiogram I have been diagnosed with an "enlarged aorta". It is 2 millimeters larger than in my prior echo cardiogram 4 years ago. I am 69 years old and in very good physical shape. The cardiologist has prescribed a beta blocker. I would like to know more about enlarged aortas and how beta blockers work to remedy this situation. Please refer me to some articles that discuss this matter/ diagnosis.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, i do care for your concern.
The swelling of the aorta is usually caused by pathology in muscular layer of the blood vessel, that result in abnormal swelling.
The beta blocker has two main effects.
1) It act on the heart, such that rate becomes slow and sustained, thus maintaining the blood flow at all times.
2) it act on the blood vessel to maintain the patency, thus preventing its further expansion.
control of blood pressure is also a must.
Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
