Is There A Clinical Diagnosis For A Person Who Seems

Is there a clinical diagnosis for a person who seems to "dive in" every time they find a new interest? I have a cousin (who I have yet to speak with and probably will not be able to until the weekend) who is in trouble financially, and probably has other stressful things on his plate I have yet to discover. His assistant called to say he has been drinking alcohol heavily - and hiding it most times. The debt is due to his buying a lot of art, and who knows what else. In our lives together growing up, I have seen him delve into "God", binge drink, become a teetotaler, philosophize, and I can't think what else off the top of my head. He goes through “phases”. My point is that he doesn't just take an interest - he seems to lose himself in it, and live it. The art I mentioned is African art of some kind. He owes thousands and thousands of dollars and yet has thousands worth of art he could sell to resolve the debt. He is obsessed with the welfare of his dogs. He is holed up in his apartment and doesn't come out for days now - it is this phase which is the most disconcerting. I am not sure what I will say to him when I do see him. I am hoping h will speak to me, but I am not sure how I can help him. Is there some sort of personality that seems to take almost “too much” interest in many different things? I am not sure I am saying it correctly. I do know he is strong willed and I think he could do anything if he had the mind to do it – but if he’s in a phase that does not include going back on the wagon I am not sure he will even hear me if I do offer to help.
