Is Taking Focalin Instead Of Vyvanse Safe For Depression And ADHD?

Such an unexpected offer of advice - 17 year old daughter, normal EEG in 2005 [recovery from Benign Rolandic Epilepsy,] diagonised ADHD, depression and anxiety- day three of 30mg Vyvance. Awaiting prescription fill for Focalin when she will stop Vyvance and begin the Focalin. Psyc is not titrating Vyvance. I am concerned about the med switch and onset of seizure activity [a total of five seizures at 5 years old]. Best, parent

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The Focalin (Dexmethylphenidate) can be used instead of Vyvanse (Lisdexamphetamine) for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder if prescribed and advised by the treating psychiatrist or neurologist only. Switching drug molecules on your own, will put her on greatest risk of ill effects of drug, seizure precipitation episodes , low efficacy than previously adjusted molecule pausing rebound symptoms of ADHD or others.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
