Is Taking Femara Safe For A Cancer Surviver?

I am 66 year old woman, recent cancer survivor and also have Parkinson s disease. I had four weeks of radiation treatments. My medical oncologist wants me to take Femara. I am afraid of the side effects. So many of these side effects do not sound very compatible with my PD and the medication that I take to ease the progression of the Parkinson s disease. In your opinion, is it necessary for mr to take the Femara?

Hello,

My answer is as follows:

While Femara drug is now recommended as the first-line treatment for women with hormone receptor positive early breast cancer, showing superior to Tamoxifen, latest scientific data have given more insights about this drug.

Recently, double-blind randomized controlled trials have shown that Femara use has no significant effect on the overall survival rate compared to placebo. In other words, regardless of taking Femara or doing nothing, the overall survival rate does not change. However, taking Femara will give you better Disease Free Survival rate and lower occurrence of contralateral breast cancer, versus a "doing nothing" option.

Femara is much better tolerated compared to other similar drugs, but it is not free of side effects, as you might already know.

Therefore, to my opinion you have 2 options:
1. Decide to use Femara as your oncologist suggests, accepting all its side effects, but gaining a much better Disease Free Survival rate and lower risk of contralateral breast cancer occurrence (but no better overall survival); or
2. Do nothing and take the risk of worse Disease Free Survival rate, higher risk of contralateral breast cancer occurrence, but have the same overall survival rate and avoid many side effects of Femara in the meantime.

I am aware that the choice is tough, but you have to weigh risks and benefits of both options, and then make the decision. To my opinion, at this point, it is only and entirely your personal decision about how to proceed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ervin Toçi
