Is Switching From Aleve To Ibuprofen Safe?

I just had arthroscopic shoulder surgery which my surgeon said was not a whole lot to clean up. I am still swollen a little. I don t think I need the pain pill anymore-oxycodone. My shoulder is just tight with a little pain, and I am doing an exercise the surgeon asked for me to do. I am also on alive for swelling. I can live without the pain pill. Could I possibly go on ibuprofen instead of the aleve? The reason being is that I am constipated. I think I need something for swelling (I am icing the location about once an hour), but I m wondering if I will cause a problem by changing to ibuprofen. Thanks for any response.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The swelling is probably due to the procedure. Aleve and ibuprofen are very similar drugs and can be substituted for each other if necessary. Please note that constipation is probably caused by oxycodone though. Oxycodone (and the rest of the opioids) commonly cause constipation while non-steroid-anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) do not (at least not commonly). Putting ice every hour seems too much. I would have gone for 15-20 minutes every couple of hours.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
