Is Swimming Safe During 17th Week Of Pregnancy?

Hello I am currently 17 weeks pregnant. I had a McDonald Cerclage two weeks ago and had a follow-up a week after the cerclage in which my cervix was measuring 3.9 cm. I am experiencing moderate back pain in which my mfm suggested swimming. Is it safe to go swimming in a salt-water vs chlorinated pool? Also, will swimming reduce the chances of my cervix from funneling/shortening as oppose to traditional exercises like walking?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

You can swim for short laps.

However, prolonged swimming and diving are not safe.

Do not go deep into the pool.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
