Is Sudden Elevation In Blood Sugar Level A Cause For Concern?

Hello Dr. My fathers fasting blood sugar is 289. two months ago it was 160 and it increased all at once. Now I would ask you whether it is dangerous or not? Moreover, he is nervous person and even for not important issues he becomes nervous. Does is affect his blood sugar though? And finally What do you advice him to do and to eat?

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HealthCareMagic.
Well, with your Father's previous sugar being 160mg, it suggests that he is diabetic. If it has increased to 289 in two months as you are suggesting, it is a concern as if it is uncontrolled, he may land up in trouble.
Basically, it might have shot up because of poor control of diabetes, may be because of diet or improper working of medications, or both. Since you say he is a nervous person, emotions also would have contributed to his blood sugar elevation.
What needs to be done is get his basic investigations done: Fasting glucose, Post Prandial Glucose, Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), Fasting Lipid Profile and Urine Microalbumin.
Then, based on the results, it could be decided weather blood glucose can be brought down through medication alone or may require insulin. If he needs insulin, then he requires to be monitored and hence need hospital admission and care. Hence you need to take opinion from a Physician or Diabetologist in this regard.
Hope the information provided would be useful. All the best.
