Is Sore Throat With White Lumps On Tonsils After Having Sex Symptom Of HIV?

Hi, I had sex with someone a week ago and wore a condom. five days after I started to develop a sore throat with white lumps on my tonsils, the white lumps have now gone after two days but my tonsils are still slightly swollen. I did not know the person who I had sex with and do not know their HIV status, I have read that a sore throat with white spots can be an early symptom of HIV, am I right to be worried or am I panicking over nothing?

Hello dear,

A. First of all, HIV cannot be diagnosed only on the basis of symptoms.
The presence of sore throat with white lumps on tonsils is indicative of Acute tonsillitis.
It can be managed with a course of antibiotics, analgesics (like Paracetamol) & perform warm salt water gargle.
Kindly consult an ENT specialist & start treatment as advised.

B. There is no need to panic with thoughts of HIV infection.
To relieve your concern, you can undergo certain tests like p24 assay or PCR for HIV, which becomes positive within a week and are almost 100 % sensitive.
Even the presence of a single virus in the body can be detected by PCR.
So, if this test comes negative, you can be sure that you are safe.
