Is Sharp Pain Across Both Sides Of Chest A Symptom Of Anxiety?

5 days ago I had some sharp pains across both sides of my chest. They woke me round 3:30 in the morning and I had to stand to try and ease them. They went on for a few hours before some relief came. I almost went to the hospital but have had lots of stresses in my life since my son had a serious accident and have been to the hospital with chest pain before and been told it is anxiety. For the past 2 days I have had about 2 inches from the centre of my chest on the left hand side some heaviness like a small elephant pressing down every now and then. I am a 52 year old woman. Don t drink or smoke, am fit and healthy. Don t take any medication but have lots of stress. Could this be a syptom of anxiety too.

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms are not suggestive of any cardiac disorder. Musculo-skeletal pain could mimic this clinical situation.

Anyway, I recommend consulting with your attending physician for a physical exam and some tests:

- a resting ECG and cardiac enzymes
- a chest X-ray study
- complete blood count, PCR, ESR for inflammation.

In the meantime, I recommend taking acetaminophen and an antiacid or PPI (omeprazole or pantoprazole) in order to help avoid acid reflux.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
