Is Severe Vomiting By Toddler Post Ingestion Of Baby Oil Harmful?

hi. My 20month old ingested baby oil on monday afternoon it is now friday 12am. At the time of drinking the oil she coughed twice, only slight coughs. She s ben fine since then, no diarrhea but thursday early house of the morning i found her in her cot with vomit all over. she continued to vomit throughout the morning. during the afternoon and evening she vomited again twice after being fed twice. Is it possible that the vomiting can due to the baby oil ingested on the Monday, 3 days prior? if so is there still a ridk at this point of lung respiratory problems? She s coughs slighlty here and there. maybe jûst 3 times during the day.

Thank you for your query.

Ingested baby oil is harmful for your baby's stomach. These contains chemicals (hydrocarbons) that are meant only for the skin. When it comes in contact with mucosa (lining of the stomach and gastrointestinal tract), it causes inflammation and gastritis, leading to vomiting.

Vomiting due to any reason can result in respiratory problems if the child cannot clear all the vomit from her throat /mouth. The situation is worse if she is laying down and In her sleep

I urge you to take her to the ER where she can be looked at immediately. Unexplained vomiting with a back ground of recent poisoning should be checked out immediately.

In the meantime, keep her head elevated by 30 degrees at least. Monitor her closely. Do not give her medications unless seen be a doctor. Certain antiemetics (to prevent vomiting) can be sedative. Sedation may impair the cough reflex.

Give easily digestible diet, monitor her urine output. More importantly, seek medical attention right away.
Hope she feels better. Please get back to us if you have further questions. Wish you both good health
