Is Severe Pain Along With Swelling In Ankle Due To Sprain?

rolled my left ankle while running on uneven surface. Didn t hurt at first, but a few days later, sore right above the ankle bone, and seems to be getting worse. Hurts on full weight when going up and down stairs. Behind calf also sore. Did I sprain it? Some swelling (minor) and bruising (minor). Thoughts on treatment?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have pain along with swelling in ankle due to sprain. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like soft tissue injury ( ligament or tendon ) , fracture or dislocation . I would suggest you to keep your foot in hot water tub with espom salt for 15 minutes thrice a day , take proper rest and give proper rest to your foot , apply over the counter anti inflammatory cream on ankle and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain . If condition doesn't get well then consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination . Doctor may order CT scan along with physical examination . Doctor may give plaster , prescribe muscle relaxant , anti inflammatory or may recommend physical therapy .
