Is Sedation Required For A 62-year-old Male Suffering From Pneumonia?
Hello, My brother is 62 years old, healthy and fit and all went wrong 6 weeks ago. He was told he had brain tumor when he complaint about his sudden loss of mobility in his arms and poor eyesight which lasted a week and consulted the doctor . He was told he has brain tumor and was operated straight away. He came out good and returned home after 5 days of the operation. 3 weeks later he was rushed back to hospital complaining difficulty in breathing. He was sedated unconscious from day 1 in the hospital which was 8 years ago. He remained sedated all along and was told that he has a massive stroke yesterday because the doctor realized he has no movement on his right arm. He is in one of the private hospital in Singapore. My query is is it normal to sedate him from the day of submission when he was diagnosed as only having pneumonia and now resulted to this???
In severe form of pneumonia, there may be respiratory failure and in that case sedation and even ventilator support may be needed. Nothing much to worry and your treatment is in the right track.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
