Is Premedication With Antibiotics Advisable For Extraction Of Abscessed Tooth?

I am 60 yrs old with a heart murmur and an abscessed tooth with swelling, which needs to be extracted, I went to dentist today she wanted to extract I told her I always premedicated with antibiotics first she said it is not necessary yet she showed me x-ray with all the infection. I politely left.

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain Yes, if you have an abscessed tooth that needs extraction which is clearly due to infection a pre-medication with antibiotics is needed to prevent any complications post extraction like Infection..

As you already have infection in tooth and a history of heart murmur then a premedication is a better option..
At times the dentists prefer to medicate the patient post extraction only if the infection is not severe..

So my suggestion is to consult an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and a clinical examination and investigations like x ray will be done and also your medicines which you are taking for heart murmur will be checked..
If you take any blood thinners they have to be stopped a week before extraction..

You can be advised a short course of antibiotics before the extraction procedure followed by post-extraction medication..

Hope you get well soon..

Thanks and regards..
