Is Pregnancy Possible Despite Taking Oral Contraceptive?

Hi Doctor, I had intercourse with my girl friend on Thursday around 11 am and she is taking I pill today around after 40 hrs of intercourse. When do we know that the Pill has worked. She had her last period on January 14. What are the probabilities that the pill may not work?

thank you for posting your query in heathcaremagic.com....

well taking emergency contraceptive pills like i-pill within 72 hours is recommended to avoid pregnancy and works really well....however, after 72 hours it is generally ineffective...
your girlfriend had the pill around 40 hours....so it should work....the failure rates are as low as 2-3% so its likely it will work...
if she has her periods coming regularly then you can rule out pregnancy....even if she does not have her period on time, a urine pregnancy test will assure you of the outcome...

hope this was helpful...
regards
