Is Persistent Swelling In Legs Suggestive Of Liver Problems?

I don t know what specialist I need. I think I may have something wrong with my liver. For six months now, I have been swelling so bad. My legs hurt so bad and I can hardly walk. I have been to five different doctors wh o cant help me, and don t know where to send me. That is why I have to find someone myself. My weight went up thirty pounds in the last six months. My legs, especially my calves, feet, ankles, toes, thighs are so big. About four months ago, my calves hurt so bad and just looking at them would hurt anybody. They started leaking and did that for about two days. I was also going to order myself a pair of support hose and my leg at that time (three months ago) was 15 inches. Last night, I measured again, eighteen inches. WOW. No wonder the pain, they are getting ready to burst. I have had two sets of bloodwork done in the past month. The first one he was looking to see if there was anything wrong with my kidneys. It came back negative but I had a high amount of self induced sodium. I thought that was odd, because I don t even use a salt shaker. I still started drinking a lot of water because I was guilty of that. In two weeks I was tested again, and I guess my sodium was ok, but then my protein levels were low. Don t know what do down here in South Jersey. I need to know what is wrong. I hope you can please help me.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Reduced protein levels in blood can be due to two reasons, either your liver is diseased and is not able to make them properly or you are loosing protein in urine. You will require a complete evaluation of liver including an ultrasonography and a urine test for loss of protein in urine.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Wishing you all the best.

Regards,
Dr. Loveleen Sharma, General & Family Physician
