Is Periodic Pain In Chest Caused By Mitral Valve Prolapse?

I am male, and 42. My blood pressure averages around 140/90. I was diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse about a year ago, after having a very disturbing afternoon of (painless) racing heartbeat, then series of pronounced heart thumping for a few weeks. Since then, I have been prescribed 50mg Atenolol and the heart palpitations are gone, but I still have periodic pain in my left chest, but never due to exertion. Lately, I feel a whooshing sensation under and to the left of my right nipple.

How common is pain associated with Mitral Valve, and is regurgitation a possible suspect?

Hi,

Palpitations may be caused by mitral valve prolapse, but pain is not typical for the prolapse and most probably has another cause. It may be a neuromuscular pain and caused by costochondritis or spine problems. It is disturbs you much, take Ibuprofen 400 mg three times a day for five days after a meal.

Take care
