Is Patchy Hair Loss A Symptom Of Thyroid?

Sure, my hair dresser noticed that I have small patches of hair loss on my head and I feel more fatigued lately...she asked me if I had my thyroid checked. I had a physical in November but they didn t see anything at that time. I take only atorvastatin 25 mg (which I started 3 months ago) and an eye drop for pre-glaucoma.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome to HCM.
I can understand your concern for the hair loss.
Yes, in addition to anemia, hypocalcemia, and other nutritional deficiencies, hypothyroidism can also cause hair loss. Certain drugs like Atorvastatin, Colchicine and Cancer chemotherapeutic agents are also known to cause hair loss.
In view of the above possibilities, I advise you to consult your treating physician to find out the exact cause of hair loss and use an alternate but safer medication to lower your high cholesterol level. You may also require to have CBC, Serum Calcium, thyroid function tests to rule out the underlying cause if any. Hope this helps you.
Best wishes.
