Is Pain In The Jaw While Chewing A Side Effect Of TMJ?

I am having really bad pain in my left jaw and hurts more when I eat. It made a loud grinding noise when yawning about 4 days ago. I ve been having TMJ for a couple years now and try to avoid opening my mouth wide. This pain is getting worse every day! Who should I see?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain the symptoms of grinding sounds and pain while eating along with a history of TMJ is due to TMJ only and looks more probably due to displacement of the articular disk that is present as a soft cushion between the two bony ends of jaw joint..
The grinding sounds seems to be due to direct contact of the the bony ends..
I would suggest you to consult an Oral Physician or Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like ORTHOPANTOMOGRAM or OPG can help in ruling out the exact cause and will be treated accordingly..
As of now you can start taking symptomatic treatment like anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen or Naproxen..
Muscle relaxant like Chlorzoxasone can be taken.
Take a soft diet..
Do warm compresses over the jaw joint..
You can also massage the sides of the face with gentle round motions of finger tips..
You should avoid opening the mouth too wide as well as avoid stress that can cause tensing of muscles..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
